Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is celebrating it’s anniversary today, originally released November 26, 1986. I vividly remember seeing this in the theater and enjoying this fun entry, especially after the darker preceding film. While in San Francisco a few years ago, I visited a few of the locations.
Shortly after arriving on 20th century earth, the crew cross the street at the corners of Kearny, Pacific, and Columbus Streets in San Francisco, California.
The donut shop on the right is now a coffee shop located at 200 Columbus Avenue.
Here they pass the saloon at 1232 Grant Avenue and across the street to 1230 Grant Avenue. I’m assuming the ad was a façade created for the film.
The scene were they are looking for the nuclear wessels is on the corner of Mason Street and Columbus Avenue.
Most of the Cetacean Institute was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium at 886 Cannery Row in Monterey, California.
The inside has been renovated but looks like the floor is the same.
This shot is partially a matte painting to not only create the tank but also place it near San Francisco in the background.
Nothing changed here!
Here are a couple aquarium windows they walk by.
The next shot definitely used a blue screen, but I’m not sure if this was entirely in studio or they shot it at the acquarium.
I love when the lighting is almost exactly the same as the movie.
Only minor renovations on the patio.
This was shot next to the Golden Gate Bridge obviously.
Here is more of the patio. Any shots that include the whales were done at Paramount Studios.
The next scene was shot near Marina Green Park, just east of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The houses in the background are on Marina Boulevard.
Back to the aquarium!
Again, a matte shot to demonstrate the empty tank.
The crash into the bay was shot at Paramount Studios. When this is not in use as a water tank, it is a parking lot.
